Summer High School Competitive Program

High School U17 / U19 Competitive Information

The team is open to athletes (rowers, and coxswains), with U17 or U19 status (as defined by USRowing) who have one or more years of rowing experience.  PWC’s Competitive Summer Program is offered to provide those wishing to continue rowing/competing over the summer with a focus on improving fundamental rowing skills and representing the Oxford Boathouse in local and National Regattas.  Members of this group should anticipate training in both sweep and sculling boats.  Athletes should be prepared for racing in multiple boat classes and events during the competition.

Registration for the Summer Racing Program will be open for all athletes interested in racing this summer. All athletes will be evaluated by members of the coaching staff as well as additional factors to include but not limited to: 2K score, power to weight ratio, 10 stroke & 1-minute watt tests, overall fitness, technical aptitude, and boat moving ability during the Program Evaluation Period.  Following the Program Evaluation Period, athletes will be notified which program, Competitive vs Select, and regattas they'll be attending.

This program is for Junior athletes looking to:

  • Improve their technical skill and proficiency in rowing
  • Improve physical fitness
  • Advance their collegiate recruiting profile
  • Enjoy a unique summer experience rowing with like-minded boatmates on the Occoquan.

General Requirements
WATER BOTTLETo help reduce the waste created by the use of disposable water bottles, we ask rowers to arrive with two reusable water bottles daily.

SWIM TESTAll participants are required to have a swim test on file with their crew boosters’ club or with Prince William Crew (PWC). The requirements and form can be downloaded from the Forms page.

PHYSICAL EXAMINATION FORMAll participants are required to submit a current (within the past 12 months) VHSL Jan 2021 or equivalent Sports Physical Examination.  It is strongly suggested, but not required, that you use the  VHSL form so it may be used in participating in other activities requiring a physical during the school year.  Please only submit a copy of the physical and retain the original for your records.  The requirements and form can be downloaded from the Forms page.

SESSION CAPA session may close before the scheduled closure day due to the "cap" for that session being reachedIf this occurs, the registrant will be placed on a waitlist.  Should a slot open, the registrant will be contacted before the entry is moved from the "waitlist" to "active" status.  If no slots open up, you will be contacted by the Program Administrator to see if you would like to move to another potential time slot being offered.  Register early to avoid being placed on the waitlist or preferred time slot closing.

SESSION CANCELLATION -   A session will be "canceled" if an insufficient number of rowers are registered by the Friday before the session scheduled start date.  In case of cancellation, the registrant will receive a full refund or may transfer to another available session.  This will be coordinated by the Program Administrator.
